What is your digestives system trying to tell you, using poo?

The color of your stool its trying to tell you sometime  about your health:

Your stool is your digestive systems (DS) way of talking to you , its how your DS tells you if what you are eating is working in your body or not or if you are in a state of good health or a state of sickness.

Consistency , frequency  and color, those are the three main  languages of you DS. in this entry I will be telling you about Color ,  how i understand color to effect your overall health , which colors are good which are bad and which are very concerning.

There are 9 main color of stool from which I have found in my research about stool,

Medium brown
Yellow
Green
Orange
Very light brown
Gray
Bright red
Dark red
Black

Now what is your DS trying to tell you when your stool is Medium Brown ?

Medium brown , your DS is saying that you are in good health, it is agreeing with your diet and thinks you are on the right track. I do not have much to say about this color as for the reason i rarely see it in my Toilet bowl…

Yellow, yellow is to be concerned over sometimes , however it is very common …especially for me.
Reasons why your stool may be yellow, and/or what it could be telling you. For some it could mean very little for others it may be a sign of something serious

Diet:
Malabsorption of fat and/or fiber
to much yellow dye or food in your diet.

Health:
Parasitic infection
Pancreatic cancer
gilbert’s syndrome “gilbert’s syndrome define, can cause mild jaundice from time to time. It is usually harmless and does not require treatment. It is due to a reduced amount of a chemical in the liver which processes a breakdown product of blood cells, called bilirubin.”
also anxiety is thought to cause yellow stool

Associated Symptoms:
possible Abdominal pain
Bloating

Diarrhea

What your DS may be telling you to do when you have yellow stool?
If it lasts for longer then a week inform your doctor , lower your intake of yellow foods.  Take more fiber and fluids

Green stool , not something to be to concerned with but f it lasts for a long period of time ,it may be, also very common for a IBDer.

Diet:
broccoli
spinach
iron supplements
green food coloring

Health:
Bile salt production low
Bile flow obstruction
Liver disease

gall bladder disease
infection

Associated Symptoms:
possible Abdominal pain
Bloating

Diarrhea

What your DS may be telling you to do when you have Green stool?
Increase your fiber intake, inform your doctor if green stool lasts for over a week, possible try a cleanse but remember folks especially if you have IBD or any chronic disease to  never start a cleanse without informing your GI or doctors , trust me I have learned from personal experience that just because you think it is a good idea your GI may have reasons why it is not or may have advice on how to cleanse safely.

Orange , orange stool is not very common at least in my opinion.

Diet:
carrots
turnip greens
sweet potatoes
winter squash
collard greens
cilantro
thyme
any other food that have artificial yellow-orange coloring

Health:
“Transit time of stool is too fast, not sufficiently exposed to bile during digestion”
Low bile salt production,
Liver disease
gallbladder disease
Bile flow obstruction

Associated Symptoms:
possible Abdominal pain
Bloating

Diarrhea

What your DS may be telling you to do when you have Orange stool?
Consult doctor if orange stool lasts for an elongated period of time , ask doctor about trying a cleanse

Very light brown, not a good sign not horrible but not good.

Diet:
Too much fat in the diet
Too little fiber intake

Health:
Liver problem
Malabsorption

Associated Symptoms:
constipation

Diarrhea

What your DS may be telling you to do when you have light brown stool?
your DS is trying to tell you that your diet sucks and you should try to Improve your it. Liver and colon cleanse  would be a good idea if approved by your doctor. inform doctor if light brown stool is pro-lasting.

Gray stool , gray stool is not something you should want it is not very common.

Diet:
couldn’t find any dietary causes if you know some please comment on this entry!

Health:
gallbladder disease
Bile flow obstruction
Bile salt production
Alcoholic hepatitis-define viva google”Alcoholic hepatitis is hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) due to excessive intake of alcohol. Cysts
Gallstones
Hepatitis A,B, or C
Infection

Sclerosing cholangitis
medication

Strictures
Tumor

Associated Symptoms:
Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)

Loss of appetite
fatigue
Weakness

What your DS may be telling you to do when you have light brown stool?
Your DS is telling you to seek medical attention.

Bright red stool , bright red stool is concerning, although it is very common for some with IBD it still should not be taken lightly.

Diet:
red dye in food or beverages

Health:
Hemorrhoids,
Polyps
Ulcers
Anal fissures,
Colorectal cancer

Associated Symptoms:
pain during bowl movements

constipation
diarrhea

What your DS may be telling you to do when you have bright red stool?
seek medical attention , even if this is a common occurrence for you, you should at least inform your GI.

Dark red stool , the red flag is up on this one! not a good sign at all.

They are most often a consequence of portal hypertension, commonly due to cirrhosis; patients with esophageal varices have a strong tendency to develop bleeding.”

Associated Symptoms:
pain during bowl movements

constipation
diarrhea
Abdominal pain
Vomiting
Weakness
Dizziness

What your DS may be telling you to do when you have bright red stool?

seek medical attention straight away unless you know for a fact is was caused by food, like for example if you ate a can of beets covered in ketch up with a side of tomato soup it may be safe to say it was your diet…

Black stool , ya not good , not a color anyone wants see in the toilet bowl

Dizziness

What your DS may be telling you to do when you have Black stool?
Your DS is yelling at you  to GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR!

Now that we have gone through all the colors, in my opinion the best color to have would obviously be medium brown and the worst would be dark red or black, I put a poll on a few IBD support pages on FB to see which stool color is most common in the IBD community lets see what the results were…

color of stoolOkay so as we see Medium brown stool won! which is good , follow by yellow than green , with all the others at a stalemate except orange whom received 0 votes.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this post , I hope this information was helpful, if you have anything to add feel free to comment in the comment section below , I love reading your input and vote in the following poll!

  1. nobody says:

I get black stool on iron supplements. Maybe it’s just really dark green, but as far as I can tell it’s black. My gastroenterologist said it’s okay as long as it isn’t tarry and doesn’t look like coffee grounds (which indicates an upper GI bleed). So iron could also be a factor in black stool for other people, too.
